In the music video for Brad Paisley’s latest single, “Crushin’ It,” several of country’s biggest hitmakers are reimagined as superheroes brought together to save the day.
Paisley not only co-wrote, co-produced and recorded the catchy summer tune, but he also completely animated the video himself on his very own laptop computer.
“There’s also something really fun about knowing that this is all mine,” he recently told CMT Hot 20 Countdown. “Like it says at the end, you know, his fault — my fault. So I did all this. I drew all these people. No one to blame but me.”
Paisley says the video-making process even led to some unexpected family time with his two sons, Huck and Jasper.
“When I started working on this cartoon, there were a lot of days that were spent with me sitting at the kitchen table with this computer and them with paper and crayons and stuff. I was drawing country music superheroes, and they were drawing Spiderman. And it’s something I’ll never forget. It’s a good memory for me.”
Paisley admits it took some work to get his fellow artists’ features just right during the animation.
“When you think about Luke Bryan, you gotta get the teeth right,” he said. “It’s also about the relationship between where the eyes the ears and the nose and the mouth. I would draw it, and I would look at, like, George Strait. And I would think, ‘No, still not,’ and you would move his eye like that much higher and it would be, like, ‘That’s it!’
“And I don’t know why, but it’s interesting how subtle some of those things are. George Strait wasn’t easy, as you could imagine. He’s not an easy person to draw.”
Paisley admits there were a few benefits to animating the video alone, especially when he was transforming himself into a superhero.
“Everybody said, ‘You’re really buff in this.’ And I said, ‘Of course I am. It’s my damn cartoon,’” he joked.
“If you wanna be buff in real life, work out. If you wanna be buff in my cartoon, be nice. Play along.”
